Deaf And Blind

Usher syndrome - “a genetic disease causing deaf and blindness.” A simple definition. In essence, this disease slowly blinds you by progressive retinis pigmentosa, as well as ruin your hearing through congenital hearing loss. This particular disease can only be inherited, and is uncommon becuase it is a recessive trait. It can occur in an estimated 1 in 11,000 people.

Usher Syndrome” is not a name which best describes or reflects its signs and symptoms. It was named this becuase of C.

H. Usher, a British ophthalmologist. He wrote about the disease when it was unknown, and described cases in which there was a clear link between congenital deafness and retinis pigmentosa. This was long ago, and he was ahead of his time, as the paper was writtin in 1914.

This condition has three seperate types; Usher Syndrome I, II and III. I is the most unfair, as the child is born almost completely deaf, and eyesight begins to fail after about age 10. In type II, eyesight does not tend to degrade until later in life, but the child is born hard of hearing. Type III syndrome is the most common, wherein loss of sight and hearing occurs much later in life.

The USH3A gene is responsible for creating a protien that is essential in the development and upkeep of the retina and inner ear. Basic Knowledge on Pop Art Paintings

Pop art was an art movement that initially occurred in the United States of America in the early sixties. The epicenter of this art phenomenon was New York, the city confirming its trend setting leader position. Although this movement strongly erupted in the early sixties, the attempts of change started during the late fifties in the work of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. These painters wanted to replace the abstract mode of artistic expression, aiming at making the art’s message easier to be understood by the public. The first pop art paintings contained easy to recognize images of common items. The purpose of incorporating these objects was to mock the gravity, the metaphysical dullness of abstract expressionism that had started to become out of fashion. Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg introduced amusing objects into the first pop art paintings: flags, maps and targets or stuffed animals and rubber tyres for the latter artist. The pop art movement become famously known for their main feature: mockery and irony.

Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein were the most representative artists for this new art stream. Their pop art paintings were characterized by their original display of popular culture’s symbols: advertisements, media images or even comic strips. These new, colorful, lively pop art paintings were strikingly opposing the gravity, the spirituality of abstract expressionism. Consequently, these kinds of pop art paintings become very popular among the art loving public and among the art critics community. But the abstract expressionism continued to be highly appreciated, despite the pop art paintings’ mockery.

Although the pop art movement was popular and influential it proved to lack the strength of completely supplant the abstract expressionism, but it determined the birth of two new schools of abstraction: color-field painting and minimalist art. The color-field painting movement (mainly represented by painter Helen Frankenthaler) minimized the influence of abstract expressionism’s old features into a style completely committed to the use of pure color.

The American art of the sixties remained in the art history books as a period of constant rivalries between different competing styles and ideas. Yet, the pop art paintings represented best the ideas and the symbols of the American lifestyle in the sixties

Pop art was an artistic movement that represented a strong shift from the influence of the abstract expressionism. Pop art paintings brought an original form of making art by introducing techniques of commercial art and everyday life illustrations.

This movement first occurred in Great Britain in the late 1950s and it was meant to be a redefinition of the metaphysical gravity of the abstract expressionism. Pop art paintings were mainly characterized by the insertion of everyday life images of soup cans, comic strips, Coke bottles or even stuffed animals into the artistic expression. The expressed aim of the pop art paintings was to provide a meeting point for artists and public. Inserting commercial art symbols in their work, the artists intended to blur the boundaries between art and common people in order to make art ideas accessible for everyone.

The birth of this art movement during the 1950s-1960s wasn’t a coincidence. Artists were getting tired of the inwardness and opacity of the abstract expressionism; the American society (and the British one, but on a less extent) was enjoying deep changes in terms of economic revival after the constraints of the Second World War. Therefore, the artist community mocked the shallowness and the materialism of the Americans, employing symbols of mass culture (Coke cans, magazines or comic strips) in their pop art paintings.

The artists who had embraced this art style used different symbols: American flags (Jasper Johns), comic strips (Roy Lichtenstein) and soup cans (Andy Warhol) or stuffed animals (Robert Rauschenberg).

Pop art paintings also represented icons of the artists’ reaction against the dullness and complexity of the abstract expressionism. Abstract techniques were replaced with more accessible ones like humor or surface appearance. The central idea of this art movement was to express messages to the mass by transforming the ordinary things into art objects.

Although the pop art stream was very popular among the layman public, it was highly controversial among the art critics community. Some considered pop art paintings as cheap, tacky imitations of everyday life symbols; others regarded them as icons of the shallow American society at mid-century.

Nevertheless, this art movement represented a breath of vivid, fresh air in an art characterized until then by opacity and seriousness.

• Although settling into your comfort zone may be tempting, it will not put you on the track to success. Growing personally and professionally requires you to bolster your risk-taking skills.

• Because the world is changing at a rapid and accelerating pace, those who are unwilling or unable to take risks will become ineffective if not obsolete.

• Being nimble and quick to adapt is part of being effective as a risk-taker.

• It’s important to let your judgment skills override a reflexive - and likely negative - response to fear of the unknown.






People who consistently perform at a higher level have certain things in common.

They are committed to their success.
They have a passion for their profession.
They have clear goals.
They are comfortable taking well-reasoned risks.

Their ability to take thoughtful risks is an important ingredient in their success. It is also a significant determinant in their level of achievement. Top performers are talented and persistent risk-takers.

By contrast, sub-optimal performers often settle into their comfort zone, fall into recurring patterns and stop challenging themselves in significant ways. The good news it that you can improve your risk-taking ability and hence your performance.

I am pretty knowledgeable about successful risk-taking. As a Professional Exhibition Skydiver, I’ve had to learn how to prepare both intellectually and emotionally to prevail in the face of some extraordinary risks. I’m among the few who has successfully made one of the most challenging stadium jumps in the United States into wind-buffeted Candlestick Park. By being willing to take some significant risks, I have been able to earn two skydiving World Records and be among the few to ever stand at the North Pole.

Skydiving is not the only setting where I’ve found effective risk-taking skills to be valuable. It has also been vitally important in my business career. I had to risk effectively when I was the Chief Operating Officer of an international design firm. The same was true when I was responsible for a portfolio of more than $140 million worth of commercial real estate. If I had not been willing to take some significant risks, I would still be someone else’s employee instead of working for myself for the last eight years.

The Lure of the Comfort Zone

The comfort zone is seductive. We all desire comfort. It’s human nature. However, too much comfort does not serve us well. An inability to occasionally step out of your comfort zone - to challenge yourself, to leave the familiar - will ultimately limit your performance.

Adaptability

Adaptability is vital and becoming more so. Change is pervasive and accelerating. Single-employer careers are nearly history and single-profession careers barely remain.

If you are going to thrive in a world of rapid change, you have to be adept at adapting. The more comfortable you are with taking risks and dealing with the resulting fear, the better you will be at adapting.

Change can be frightening. It confronts us with the unknown. It is common and normal to be fearful of change. Unfortunately, left unresolved, the fear response can profoundly limit your performance.

The Critical Step - Responding Effectively to Fear

Fear is powerful. It will significantly hamper your ability to risk effectively. Learning how to prevail in the face of fear is a critical step in improving your ability to take rewarding risks.

To become a more capable risk-taker, you need to move away from the instinctive response to fear and toward the counterintuitive response. The constructive - though counterintuitive - response to fear is to acknowledge and accept it.

This approach has been validated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Early in the space program, NASA observed that some of its astronauts were completing their missions successfully without suffering motion and stress sickness. Another group was consistently having these problems. Based on empirical research, NASA determined there was only one factor that differentiated the two groups.

The astronauts who were completing their mission without these physical manifestations of fear had acknowledged in advance to themselves or others that they were going to be afraid. This research documents how profoundly a constructive response to fear impacts our performance.

The Rewards of Risk-Taking

Why take risks anyway? Why even consider leaving your comfort zone? Isn’t risk-taking something we are supposed to grow out of? Isn’t it just a remnant of impertinent youthful behavior we should have left behind as we matured and grew wiser?

The partial answer to these questions has already been provided. Risk-taking yields vitality and a higher level of achievement. But there is more.

For every reasonable risk there is at least one potential reward. This is a Direct Reward. A reward that can be identified at the time the risk is being considered.

Better yet, a consistent pattern of intelligent risk-taking will yield something more: Compound Rewards! Compound Rewards are the surprise rewards - the rewards we cannot anticipate at the time we are considering the risk. These are rewards you would never have enjoyed if were not willing to step out of your comfort zone. But you will enjoy them if you are willing to challenge yourself, leave your comfort zone and take some risks.

It occurred for me. A few years ago when I was 10,000 feet over the North Pole and moments away from the 120 degree below zero temperature of freefall, I had no way of knowing what Compound Rewards that risk would bring. I had no way of knowing that jump would be the first step in a most extraordinary career transition that would lead me to abandon a fairly conventional corporate career path and make my avocation of skydiving a major part of my vocation.

We don’t know the rewards we will enjoy by our willingness to take thoughtful risks, but we do know the rewards will not occur unless we are willing to take those risks. And wouldn’t it be a shame to forgo some wonderful, if unknown, rewards just because we can’t seem to find our way out of our comfort zone!

The Power of Awareness

Have you ever gotten all worked up about something, and said something (or did something) that you later regret?

Perhaps things would have been different if you had recognized your “stress reaction.”

Awareness may be the key to having less stress. That sounds simple, but it is true. Half of the battle in reducing stress may be increasing our awareness of how we react to people and situations.

What kind of stress do you experience on a daily basis? Almost anything in your environment can trigger stress. Consider the following stress triggers:

Your workplace. Do you have a disorganized boss, or a co-worker who you can’t get along with? Or perhaps your subordinates are unreliable, lazy or deceitful. If it isn’t the people at work, it’s the threat of downsizing, merger, take-over, acquisition, etc.

Your home. If you’re a stay-at-home parent, you may feel that your dreams and aspirations have fallen by the wayside. Your total focus has become cooking, cleaning, and caring for your children and spouse. There may be little or no time left for just you.

Relationships. It is stressful to have conflicts between you and your spouse, children, relatives or friends.

Poor nutrition. Do you eat fresh fruit and vegetables? Do you take vitamins? If not, your body is not getting the vital nutrients that it needs to survive and thrive. In other words, your body is suffering from nutritional stress. If you improve your eating habits, you will have more energy and feel better during the day.

Overeating. Eating too much or the wrong foods puts a strain on your heart. Paul Bragg once said, “You are what you eat, drink, breathe, think, say, and do.” Many people over-fuel their body. They eat too much, and their lifespan is shortened because of it.

Water. Do you drink eight glasses of water every day? If you don’t drink enough water, your body will be physically stressed and susceptible to disease. Our body is made up of over 70% water. Water plays an important part in nearly every body function, from circulation to digestion to elimination.

Chemical substances. Do you smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs? Do you take prescription medicine or over-the-counter drugs? This can put physical stress on your liver, lungs and kidneys.

There are many other things in our lives that trigger stress. Awareness may be the first step in putting things into perspective. Awareness causes you to realize that you’ve got a challenge on your hands.

It may be impossible to eliminate stress, but you can respond to it in a healthy and constructive way. It is better not to respond with anger, lashing out or even “stuffing” your feelings. Don’t feel sorry for yourself either. Take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds and exhale slowly. Do this several times, if you need to gain composure.

When you’re calm and level headed, you’ll be ready to think clearly. You’ll also be able to respond appropriately. Ask yourself: “What am I going to do next? What actions will I take to change or resolve matters? What can I do differently? If something is not working, how can I adjust my approach?”

Whatever you decide to do, awareness (and taking action) will help you get on your way to less stress.

Laughter is good for you

Have you ever thought about laughter as healthy?

Over 25 years ago, Dr. Norman Cousins in his book “Anatomy of an Illness” described how watching Marx Brother movies helped him recover from a life-threatening tissue disease. “Laughter is an antidote to apprehension and panic,” wrote Dr. Cousins.

Can laughter improve your health? Yes! Medical studies have shown that laughter utilizes muscles throughout the body. For instance, laughter exercises the lungs and circulatory system and increases the amount of oxygen in the blood. Laughter also:

· Reduces muscle tension
· Boosts levels of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers
· Reduces levels of hormones and neurochemicals
· Stablizes blood pressure
· Increases heart rate
· Provides a natural boost to the immune system

Amazingly, laughter also reduces stress. Levels of epinephrine, the stress hormone which constricts blood vessels and suppresses immune activity–decrease in the body as a result of laughter
In other words, laughter is a good way for people to relax! It is beneficial from the inside-out, and has no side effects.

Do you have respiratory problems? It may be possible to laugh them away. There have been incidences where a hearty belly laugh helped people with respiratory problems by clearing mucus and aiding ventiliation.

Laughter also gives your heart a good cardiac workout. Some hospitals have stand-up comedians and “clown kids” in attempts to speed their patients healing, recovery and boost morale.

Medical researcher Dr. Lee Berk found that laughter increased the activity of “natural killer cells” which destroy viruses and tumors. Laughter also increased disease-fighting protein, B-cells, the source of a disease-destroying antibody, and T-cells which help cellular immune response.

Today is a fantastic day to laugh, learn, love, and grow. You can do it! Go ahead and laugh. It’s good for you.

Are You Exercising Your Way To Stress?

Why exercise can’t cure stress, depression or anxiety

You’re right, the headline is a very strange one! Exercise is vital to maintain good health and most of the time, the benefits of exercise far out-weigh the drawbacks. But if you suffer from a stressful or a depressive illness, exercise can actually make you feel worse. But how can this be?I’m sure you’ve heard the following statement over and over again: exercise can help you to beat stress, or alleviate anxiety or boost a depressed mind. This is only true in part. Because many exercises can actually worsen these illnesses. And even if you perform exercises that can help, these exercises will only help temporarily.

The reason many people believe exercise to be helpful in combating stressful and depressive illnesses is because when you exercise vigorously for longer than 20 minutes, your body floods with endorphins. These chemicals give us a buzz, and this is why it is widely believed that exercise can cure stress, depression or anxiety.

If you’re suffering a stressful or depressive episode, you’ll know that no matter how regularly you exercise, the bad feelings return. The only way to beat these illnesses is to treat the root cause – flawed modes of thinking. Exercise, though great for our bodies, simply doesn’t do anything to address modes of thinking.

When my anxiety was at it’s worst back in 2000, I exercised 4 times a week. For 2 days, I’d perform weight-training exercises. These exercises are the type of exercise that can actually make you feel worse because you have time to think about all of the issues and problems you have in your life at the time. I’d also warm up and warm down on bike machines or cross-trainers. Again, you can perform these exercises easily so you can think about your problems.

For my other workouts, I’d perform instructor-led circuit training sessions. As you’re listening out for instructions and performing sequences of exercises at a high tempo, you don’t have time to dwell on your troubles and worries. The problem is that once you stop exercising, you return to the modes of thinking which lead to stress, depression or anxiety.

As soon as my workout had finished, I’d perform flawed modes of thinking, that made me anxious and depressed. Exercising did very little to stop me performing these flawed thought processes.

Do be aware of what’s happening when you exercise. Exercises that don’t require much concentration may have you brooding over your troubles as you perform them. Jogging, walking, exercise machines, weight-training are all examples of such exercises. Instead, try ones that are more intensive or competitive so your whole concentration is required. Circuit-training worked for me, so did sports like soccer and badminton.

The idea is to give yourself a period of time where you’re not thinking about your problems and worries. And of course, you’ll do your body a whole heap of good too!The point here is to understand that exercise can only provide temporary relief. The only way to find permanent relief from your suffering is to understand and address flawed modes of thinking. And, just as physical exercise benefits our bodies, mental skills leading to better modes of thinking will bring enormous benefits to our minds.

Women who ‘wear the pants in the family’

I know right from the start that this is going to be a very controversial article, but in order to understand our modern relationship dynamics it must be looked at.

Before I say too much I want to once again acknowledge that strong independent women have added a lot of value and have indeed become a strong fiber of our nation and who we are as a people.

This empowerment however truly is a double-edged sword. When it comes down to a long-term relationship or marriage, a woman who has her own independence essentially becomes a dueling force with her husband. She is not as ’simple’ as her female counterparts in most of the world.

All of a sudden it is the man who is supposed to be in line with his wife and often just has to cater to all of her demands and needs (in extreme cases) as he feels his power slipping. It is not really an independent woman’s fault necessarily for how she became who she is, it is just the reality that we in America (who are married to each other) have to deal with it. But she is who she is.

It is the natural and biological role for the man to be the head of the house (sorry feminists), however some interesting things have happened in the past three decades. Women today have more freedom and opportunity than ever before in history in our country here and now. This has created tremendous value, contribution and excitement as well to our culture.

Because of a woman’s now inherent character and behavior, any man who chooses to be in any relationship with her for a longer-term, is going to have to put up with a lot more drama than really is natural (or prevalent in most of history before). This is the dilemma of millions of American men today. They are essentially being oppressed.

A woman is sometimes so strong in her own character and independence, that she will easily lead the family instead of the man. I know of several families specifically that are like this personally and I see the men bow their heads in low self-esteem. There really is a role reversal and is not natural; but as long as one person really is the head of the house then at least there is some semblance of balance.

Most American (marriage) relationships are ‘50/50′ (or near there) where there is a power struggle (battle of the sexes) and it’s going to take a lot of give and take and communication to make it work.
Most often a man really can not just be his 100% self without fostering resentment or nagging on his wifes part.

This is not just a hard-core traditionalist approach, rather I want to teach you from the universal perspective of objectiveness. I’m not saying definitely whether it is right or wrong that a woman can wear the pants in the family, but I want you to the side for yourself what kind of man you are and what you want to put up with in the future. My father has been divorced several times because of these issues and cost in 100,000’s of dollars.

If you end up or choose to be with one of these strong independent women, you are going to have a lot more oppression in your life than you realize, I can guarantee it. It is not in a man’s inherent nature and being to be held back and repressed from his role as head of the household and provider or to be challenged in it. Look at the way our media portrays men on t.v. in sitcoms.

So many families today, the woman is the one in control and the man is just feeling more and more like the screen door hit him on the way out to take the trash. The fact that our media portrays this, as men being incompetent buffoons, truly cements this role reversal. And it is quite pathetic I think.

If you are married, I do not want to give you advice but you are responsible for the decisions you make and hopefully you can still communicate a lot and make things work. However many married men are finding they are in way too deep into a situation that really does not feel natural to them.

My words of advice (if you will) are that, it is NOT natural. So you can breathe a little sigh of relief there. However we still have to live with these women, if we have already chosen that path.

You could say that this is a pessimistic view, but someone needs to bring it up because there is a reason we have a 50% divorce rate second to none in the world and that no one is talking about the real reason why.

Entire lives and families are destroyed founded upon a woman’s empowerment and independence (sure just put me on Oprah right now); but let me repeat again that independent women, although they have a lot of drama have added a lot of value (unparalleled value) to our society and the world.

Relationships today have become part of this 50-50 relationship dynamic in which both the man and woman try to balance things out. Now a woman has more demands and expectations than ever before in history, this makes it harder for a man and to just do his part of being head of the household when she is always on his tail about something.

So if you are still a single man, I strongly encourage you to think about the consequences of being with one of these women and a long-term relationship. Though I bet this is going to piss a lot of women off but you know what? For your sake and the sake of American men it needs to be said. I’d come close to even calling it ‘the truth’.

You should have the full right to determine and choose your life path without having to give in to a woman’s demands which are based on unnatural foundations.

I think American men have the right to come home and not hear about not stop nagging about small little details of inconsequential things. No matter what these women will say to counteract what I am saying, that just proves that they really are coming from their own independence and perception of the world as they know it. Traditional women would probably agree with me.

Little do they realize or even respect the fact that most of the women in the world, (although not as developed psychologically or motivationally), would be happy just to be their natural role of a mother while the man takes care of providing for the family.

‘Independent’ women cannot imagine that these traditional women would let men get away with some of the things they do; the sad reality is that American men are letting women get away with some of the things they do (which is unnaturally founded).

It is not the natural role for a woman to wear the pants in the family. So decide for yourself where you stand on this issue, and think about the consequences of being in a long-term relationship with a very independent woman.

I do not want you to become just another statistic; but be accountable for your actions. It is about time that American men understand what is going on, and take back their power. Maybe at this point women will really respect men for finally standing up as they keep saying ‘where are all the real men’. The solution for American women? Well…they’ll be maybe interested again in the traditional ‘nice guy’.
