Can We Change People

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

There was a class of “challenged” children and many teachers were brought in over time but each one ended up quitting in frustration. Finally, a teacher was brought in and a miracle happened. That class of students ended up becoming a group of happy, well- behaved and good students. What happened?

From the time that teacher entered the classroom, she refused to see the children as they appeared to others. She saw through and beyond appearances. She instead saw in her mind’s eye each student as a well-behaved, perfect student. She saw only their potential and perfection and they became exactly as she envisioned.

We Can Change Our Perception

Part of my teaching is that you cannot change people. What you can do is change your perception of them. When you envision them as you want them to be, in their happy and best state, they pick this up and respond on a subconscious level. In my own life, I have used this principle to great advantage. I would imagine someone being receptive and in my mind’s eye see them harmonizing with me. I would imagine them being happy or pleased or whatever and “hear” them expressing what I would like to hear. Of course, we only want to envision the highest and the best for someone. We don’t impose our will on someone else, but we can lift them in consciousness to their own highest good by maintaining that image in our thoughts and feelings. This releases the other person and allows adjustments to be made on a mental and spiritual level. Releasing is powerful. When we loose and let go, amazing things happen. There will either be a noticeable change in the person or that person will peacefully move out of our lives if they are not supposed to be there for our highest good.

Remember this principle? It is our job to see and feel the end result. It is the Universe’s job to get us there.

You Might Be Surprised

I have had students apply this principle and see changes in their spouses, friends, and others. Don’t laugh, but I have even used this on inanimate objects and it worked! The answers come when we loosen up.

Like it or not, we are greatly influenced and can become as others see us (and “feel” us). We do pick up their thoughts subconsciously. In the area of marketing, we must make the effort to project to others what we desire to project - as this determines the feedback and results we get - or else we will subconsciously respond to their ideas about us. This carries over into our personal lives. I have seen people who could not move forward because of the image of them held by those close to them. It took concerted effort to shift their consciousness beyond what others thought and finally succeed. And then there is the opposite. Many have succeeded because someone else believed in them and saw a greater potential than they saw for themselves.

Try It… You’ll Like It

Wouldn’t it be an interesting experiment to change our perceptions about a difficult person in our business life - a client, partner, co-worker, boss - or in our personal life - a spouse, partner, relative, child - and see what happens?

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain to put this principle into practice and see what happens. Instead of imaging things as they are, which I am sorry to say will only perpetuate more of the same, start imaging the person or situation as you want them to be.

Give thanks for the end result. Use the powerful gratitude principle combined with affirmative prayer to turn those very situations around by expressing gratitude for the solutions before they appear. Bringing the desired result into the “now” moment by using the gratitude principle speeds our desired good to us.

When Bad Things Happen (Part 2)

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

The good that Paul writes about is a commitment of life to the sovereign will of God. It is complete trust in God. It is a conviction that cannot be blurred even by the reality of human suffering.

Unfortunately, unlike Paul, many of us do not trust God as our sovereign Lord. We spend so much of our time and energies running around trying to reason things out and only running into dead end streets. We have enormous difficulty understanding and accepting the obvious spiritual truth that being good does not mean only good things will happen to you. We think being “good” as it were, should exempt us from troubles and when it befalls us, we frantically search for hidden meanings. It is because we cannot find satisfying answers that a multitude of us are quite willing to toss our faith and God aside and spend the rest of our lives groping helplessly in the dark.

I have witnessed, and I am sure you have too, individuals crack under the strain of personal tragedy. We have all observed the aftermath of accidents and other unexpected deaths which claimed the life of one member of a family and functionally end the lives of five others. Because of some illness, or injury or rejection or disappointment or death, I have seen people undergo radical personality transformations. They were unable to reason out their circumstance. Their faith was shallow and predicated on reason.

If God is on the throne, then we can live confident that all things are working out for our good. If God is on the throne, we will see a good that goes beyond our finite understanding. This is what faith is. Faith is most clearly demonstrated when bad things happen. But we have trouble relying on God and trusting His sovereignty. We want to know everything. We want to know what we can’t know and keep ourselves confused and pessimistic. Seneca expressed this tendency well when he said,

“We fail to know what is necessary, because we utilize our time studying unnecessary things; we do not know what is good for us because we are consumed in studying only what injures us.”

We can struggle to ascertain all the answers and it will always be an exercise in futility for “who can know the mind of God?” Paul made it clear in 1 Corinthians 13:12; “Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

The life of faith covers every single situation. Our endeavor to explain everything, establishing our own sense of well-being, will only throw all of life out of kilter. The affirmation comes at the point that we trust the sovereign God who created us, sustains us and offers us salvation through His incarnation and redemption in the person of Jesus Christ. For Christians, all things do work together for our good. We do need to be very advanced in years to look back and see how things we thought were so disastrous, worked out to a be a greater blessing than we could have ever hoped for.

Now, we must note the fact that according to Paul, things work together for the good only to those who love Him. If we love and trust and accept God; if we are convinced that God is the all–wise, all–loving Father, then we can accept and manage any difficulty that comes our way, regardless of how trying it may be. Epictetus once wrote:

Have courage to look up to God and to say, “deal with me Lord as you will. I am yours. I flinch from nothing so long as you think it is for my good. Lord, lead me where you will; put on me what you will; I will love and defend thee always before men.”

And Paul added another attachment to his assertion; things work together for the good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. The called are not merely those who receive an invitation, but they accept it, were born from above and know from experience the love of God.

When bad things happen, the faith that had been idle while good things happened, kicks in. When the road gets rough and the hills become hard to climb – faith; when we must walk through the valley of the shadow of death – faith; when our world crumbles around us and we cannot see any way out of the mess – faith; When we hear of tragedies visited upon the innocents – faith. When we cannot understand the why’s – faith.

Christians understand that the Bible does not state or even intimate that we will not suffer. Jesus’ life is our example life and His was a life of suffering. What the Bible does make clear is the promises of God. God has promised to be with us in our suffering and struggles. God has promised victory over temporal suffering in eternity. And that, my friends, is the key to understanding the reality of God’s promise that all things do work together for good. God is present with us. He is in our every circumstance.

God takes the pain, the hurt, the difficulty and walks with us through them – transforming our whole perspective on life. The essence of a surrendered life is the knowledge, the confidence, the faith that all things do work together for good in God’s eternal plan to those who love Him; to those who are called according to His purpose.

When bad things happen – FAITH!

Put Some Fire in Your Desire

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

One of the keys to success is staying motivated because it is being motivated that keeps us going out the door every day to change the world and reach our destiny! It is our desire for a better life, for change in ourselves and others, and for personal growth and fulfillment that moves our mountains! Desire!

Desire sure is a word with much more richness to it than the word “want” though they are essentially the same. “Want,” though, sounds like you could take it or leave it. “Desire” says, “I have to have it!” Desire, is “want” with a fire under it!

Unfortunately, we tend to ebb and flow from want to desire, even with the same goal! One day we may be passionate about building our business or growing our relationships and then, the next day, we find ourselves simply in the “want” camp again. The key to keeping on is to re-light the fire under want so it roars into a raging fire of desire! Then, and only then, will we see the passion needed to be tenacious pursuers of our dreams! Keeping the fire lit is what will see you through the mountains and valleys of life and the journey you are on to your success!

So what do we do? We light the fire! Here are a few thoughts to help you build the fire of your desire!

The wood:

Keep a clear mental picture of the goal. This is imperative. The picture of the goal is like the wood in a fire. It is the raw material. Know what your goal is and what it looks like.

The fuel:

Keep a list, if simply just a mental one, of all of the benefits of pursuing and reaching your goal. Make them as “sense” oriented as possible. “See” the benefits. “Hear” them. “Touch” them. This is like the fuel that we add to a fire to get it going. Now all we need is a match.

The match:

Keep yourself active! This is the match: Action! Even when you don’t feel like it, get yourself to act and soon you will see the fire burning because you have again ignited the dream! The more desire you have the more the fire burns.

Eventually the fire will begin to die out. Here is where you throw the wood on again, pour on some fuel, and if need be, strike another match. I would encourage you to not let the fire go out though, because it is easier to continually throw wood and fuel on an already burning fire than it is to start one up again!

Legacies Are Societal Actions

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

Have you ever thought that you have not done much with your life? During a recent conversation with a very dear friend, she expressed this very same sentiment. I was astounded that this energetic, high family and work ethic person had this negative self-image, but pleased that she felt comfortable sharing this thought.

Quickly, I began to ask her questions about all of the “Legacies” that she had left in this world during the last 60 plus years. Since her retirement, she relocated to be near her daughters, grandchildren and in-laws to support them. This support included taking her grandchildren to necessary school functions, being there for them after school while still being actively involved in her church and local civic organizations. Her high values, unselfish and positive attitudes to overcome life’s challenges became a rock for her family and friends. As we continued to talk, she expressed several times how I made her feel much better. Her honesty provided me with the opportunity to return one of the many legacies that she had shared with me during our 30 plus year friendship.

After our conversation ended, I began to wonder why someone with such incredible gifts and who had personally left countless individual legacies with so many people had such feelings of inadequacy?

Possibly, the presence of the media from local newspapers to television to the Internet may contribute to the development of these feelings. When we hear and see the success of others who have reached high positions whether in business or government, we may start comparing our accomplishments with these high profile media persons. Unfortunately what happens is that many of our “average” citizens fail to understand that it is these average citizens who are the backbone of this country and without their legacies we would not be the country that we are. Plato recognized the importance of citizens over 2000 years ago when he wrote, “ This City is what it is because our citizens are what they are.”

Each of us lives a legacy, not when we are gone from this earth, but when we are here. Our legacy may be something as simple as a smile to a complete stranger to taking the time to help a friend or co-worker through a difficult situation.

Just imagine what the world could be like if everyone looked at every interaction as an opportunity to leave a legacy? What would happen to your personal relationships if you intentionally acted with the desired end result to make each and every interchange one in which you left a legacy that the other person could build upon and then later share with another? Or how about at work? What additional heights could your team reach and how much stronger would your organization be by such “Legacy Leaving Actions”?

With the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the fourth anniversary of 9/11 on the horizon, the American public is being reminded of the importance of legacies. Citizens both private and corporate across the country are demonstrating “Legacy Leaving Actions” by donating their time and resources to help those affected by this natural disaster. Through the stories of those who survived 9/11 and those who didn’t, again, American citizens can hear and even see how they, average American citizens, left legacies during that fateful day which changed our country forever.

Legacies are intentional societal choices that we make every day. By being aware of these choices, makes us better citizens, better parents, better friends and ultimately makes for a better world for our children and the next generation. So as you venture forth today or tomorrow, ask yourself “Where can I leave my legacy?” and “How will that legacy benefit another citizen?”

Goal Setting and Goal Getting - What Would You Like to Accomplish in 100 Days

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

Here’s a question for you:

What would you like to have accomplished 100 days from now?

Why 100 days from now?

Well, why not? Besides, 100 is a nice round number.

You might think, “That’s not enough time. What can I possibly accomplish in only 100 days?”

Very much if you put your mind to it and use the right tools.

So what would you like to accomplish in the next 100 days?

Would it be:

Begin to save money. If you simply gave up that soda and/or candy bar each day, that $1-plus would be more than $100 by the end of the year.

Get rid of that excess weight you have been carrying around? Sure, it would be nice if you could get rid of a pound a day, just like saving a dollar a day. Though it doesn’t work that way, you could be well on your way to getting rid of that extra weight.

Start the business of which you have always dreamed.

Get your priorities in order.

Change a destructive pattern in an important relationship.

Break a bad habit and replace it with a positive one.

Whatever it may be for you, there are certain key rules that should be followed to achieve your goals. Here are just a few to get you started:

The Rule of Ink - The dullest ink is stronger than the sharpest memory. In other words, write down your goals. Commit them to paper. Just this simple action greatly increases the likelihood of meeting your goals.

The Rule of Work - Richard Bach said “There is no such thing as a wish without the power to make it come true. You may have to work for it, however.” Goals require work, as do many things worth doing.

The Rule of Dreams - It has been said that “a goal is a dream with a deadline.” One of the keys to successfully achieving goals is to have a deadline that other people know about. This will help hold you accountable. And then if you really want to change your life, achieve the goal before the deadline.

The Rule of Persistence - In the battle between the rock and the river, the river always wins. Not because the river is stronger, but because the river has the power of persistence. Stick with it! Don’t die of thirst a few feet from the water fountain.

The Rule of Action - Never leave the place where you set a goal without taking some action toward it. This prevents the No. 1 goal stealer _ procrastination _ from setting in, and it creates momentum toward your goal. Then, keep taking action and taking action and taking action and taking some more action.

Goal Setting and Goal Getting - Here Are Some Quotes that Can Change Your Life

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

Here are several quotes about setting and achieving goals. My comments follow.

The weakest ink is better than the strongest memory. - John Rickenbacker

Do you want to dramatically increase the likelihood of you meeting your goals for the new year? One of the simplest yet most powerful actions you can take is to write down your goals. It’s so easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of everyday life that it then becomes all too easy to forget about your goals. I think the saying is “when you are up to your rear-end in alligators, it’s easy to forget your original intention was to drain the swamp.”

Put your goals down on paper. Keep them where you will see them everyday. Doing this will prevent you from saying around this time next year, “oh yeah, I remember those………”

Goals are dreams with deadlines - Diana Scharf Hunt

Set “achievement dates” for your goals. Otherwise, we get caught in the trap of “someday.” As in, someday I’ll do that.

Check out your calendar. You will find:

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

What you will not find is:

someday.

So not only does someday never come, it doesn’t even exist.

Make your goals public - Dr. Philip Humbert

Go public with your goals. Share them with family and friends. It increases the likelihood of you reaching your goals in at least two ways:

1) those close to you can hold you accountable

2) those close to you can encourage you and cheer you on.

I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward. - Thomas Edison, Inventor

In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins - not through strength but by perseverance. H. Jackson Brown - A Father’s Book of Wisdom

In any endeavor worth doing, you will encounter difficulties and slips. Never, never give up and quit. Don’t die of thirst just a few feet from the water. You never know how close you may be to reaching your goal.

Each and every time you fall short, you have just learned something very powerful: you now know at least one more way that does not work. Discard it and keep going.

It really can be as simple, and as difficult, as the following Japanese proverb that says

“Fall seven times, get up eight.”

Visit SecretsofGreatRelationships.com for tips and tools for creating and growing a great relationship. You can also subscribe to our f*r*e*e 10 day e-program on how to enrich your relationship today, from relationship coach and expert Jeff Herring.

How To Master Your Game

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Learn how to master your area of endeavor the right way. Start out by finding the people and books that will make you exceptional. Seek out the best sources of information that you can afford.

Analyze each part of the skill you wish to master, then put it all together to create a fluid, form. Develop first a theoretical understanding, then a practical one. When you practice your knowledge, your work will flow and appear effortless.

Practice relentlessly. Spend long hours practicing. Keep a regular schedule for your activity. If you have long gaps between practice, you will lose some momentum in mastering your skill. The cumulative effect of practice will make you exceptional.

Self-discipline will come from imagination. When you can create a burning desire by imagining your ultimate success, self-discipline will happen spontaneously. If you don’t have a burning desire, you may want to rethink your goals. Unless you feel passionate about your goals, the smallest obstacle will throw you off course.

Believe in yourself. Recall all the previous successes you’ve had in your life. Use these memories to build an enduring self-confidence. When you believe that you can do something, you will find a way to make your belief come true.

If you methodically prepare for your own particular game you will find yourself on the way to mastery.

7 Questions To Tap Into The Limitless Power Of Your Subconscious Mind

Friday, December 29th, 2006

When you map out what you want, you let go of the trivial tasks that clutter up your thoughts. When you focus on achieving a definite major purpose, your life will assume an energy and unity that will be exhilerating. Self-discipline will appear spontaneously.

You can prime your subconscious to tell you what you really want in your life.

Here are a seven questions you could ask yourself to be clear on your major definite purpose in life.

1. Questions about your interests. What do you enjoy doing? What things do you do well? Can you isolate one of these things that you enjoy and do well and make it into a definite major purpose? What is your magnificent obessession? What gifts do you bring to this planet? How would you like to be remembered?

2. Questions about meaning. Why do you want to do this? How will it bring out the best in you? How will it benefit others? How will it sustain you? Can you make money at it?

3. Questions about resources. What resources do you need? How much time and money do you need to start? What do you need to learn? Do you need to go back to school? Do you need to join an organization? Do you need to purchase special equipment? Do you need to move to another city to find the best opportunity?

4. Questions about support. Who can help you? Who is an expert in this field? Do you need to learn from their books? Do you need to attend a class they are offering? Do you need to spend time with them in person?

5. Questions about persistence. How can you stay true to your mission? How will you motivate yourself when things go wrong? How much endurance do you have? How will you resist the temptation to give up when obstacles arise?

6. Questions about completion. When will you achieve this goal? What steps might be involved? How long do these steps take? How will you know when you’ve finally achieved your dream?

7. Questions about models. Who else has done this? How did they do it? How long did it take? Did they have more or less opportunity than you when they first started?

When you have your moment of inspiration, which will occur because of your focussed attention, you can write out a contract to yourself.

In this contract, state your major definite aim and the time you expect to acquire it.

Now read your statement to yourself–twice a day, out loud, with passion and conviction. This procedure will activate your mind to come up with answers and it will motivate you to take action.

Although this process is easy to understand and simple to apply—don’t underestimate it. When you awaken your subconscious mind, you awaken powerful thoughts and feelings that will propel you to the future you desire. You will be able to change any limiting situations. You will be able to transform your life. Life is too short to be miserable, too short to deny yourself the life of your dreams.

You can keep this energy of vital purpose alive by reading your self-promise to yourself upon arising and before going to bed.

Creating Your Own Success Support System

Friday, December 29th, 2006

People who are on the same journey tend to band together, and the journey of life is no different. Throughout the Internet and in the real world, like-minded travelers have joined to form support groups, newsgroups, goal-buddy groups, chat rooms, tele-groups (using conference call telephone bridge lines) coaching groups, and mailing lists (email or snail mail) - just to name a handful of the available support resources - all dedicated to making sure that every member or participant has a real chance to make to their goals a reality. You can find these groups through Internet searches, the “community events” section of your local paper and by word of mouth, and I heartily suggest that you do.

If there are none available that meet your needs, start one! Set down all the things you want to accomplish, and in what format you want help, and then print out some simple, eye-catching flyers announcing your new group. Put them up where they are likely to be seen by the people you need to reach - if you’re working on weight loss, post them at a gym, or doctor’s office; if your goal is worldwide travel, post at a local travel agent’s or at the library.

You can meet in your house, take turns meeting in the participants’ homes, or take advantage of the public spaces available to you in your town or city, such as parks, conference rooms in the library, food courts in the malls and other such areas. Or set up an online forum or group, if that suits you better. There are many free venues such as MSN or Yahoo! Where special interest groups can be easily set up with just a few minutes’ work. Again, locate fellow participants by putting up hard-copy flyers, posting your link in your favorite forums or newsgroups, or by emailing your friends and family to see if they, or anyone they know, would like to join.

[Note of warning: Take advantage of these resources freely and enthusiastically - but use caution and common sense make sure you aren’t taken advantage of in return. Don’t forget basic Net and real-world self-preservation, and don’t get too caught up in your excitement to pay attention to obvious and not-so-obvious warning signs.]

It’s just that simple, and it’s very effective. There’s nothing like being accountable to a group of fellow seekers and strugglers to keep you on the straight and narrow when it comes to doing the work involved in setting and meeting your goals. It’s easy enough to justify sitting around all Sunday watching X Files reruns when it’s just us, but knowing that on Monday night, fifteen people are going to be eagerly waiting for you to tell them all your accomplishments and progress of the previous week, makes it mighty uncomfortable laying there on the couch if you haven’t gotten your goal work done.

Seeking Help On Compulsive Gambling Addiction Through Emails

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Over the past year I have received a significant number of emails seeking help in their battle against compulsive gambling addiction. My goal was to help others who were going through what I went through. I have read every email received from around the world. I realized that people affected by gambling addiction needed help and they wanted it now.

I received emails from teenagers to seniors, family members and friends all looking for a solution. I also received emails from high school parents looking for statistical information, reporters from around the world, talk shows and political parties. I was amazed that people were finally realizing that compulsive gambling addiction was negatively affecting our society.

Based on the information in the emails I have learned that people are very similar around the world. It doesn’t matter what country you live in, we all have feelings, emotions and a desire to live a better life.

I have also received a few hostile emails from compulsive gamblers lashing out at the world. These are people who have lost all their financial resources, trust, family and friends and had no where to go. This at first was the most difficult emails to handle. As time went on I began to understand what they were looking for and through this process we have become comrades in our battle against gambling addiction.

Then there were individuals who emailed me and used the words I can’t go on living like this anymore. These emails concerned me the most. I always responded “If you are feeling depressed or suicidal you should go and talk it out. There are emergency hotlines, family doctor, friends, relatives and other professionals who can help you get through this period in your life. I also shared with them others who felt the same way. As each day passed and they started their recovery their self esteem increased and their desire to live increased.

Then I received emails from gamblers anonymous members upset by some of my articles. These emails I enjoyed because I knew people were listening. To set the record straight Gamblers Anonymous is wonderful for the people that they have helped and continue to help. The GA program has a lot to offer those that are willing to participate in a twelve step program. Compulsive gamblers need to find a program that works for them. It just so happens that a large percentage of the emails I receive are from people who tried Gamblers Anonymous and were unsuccessful. People involved in gambling addiction recovery programs need to be very realistic and open minded. I received one email from a person who replaced his gambling addiction with exercise. He told me that it’s been eighteen months now and his life has completely turned around. Other emails I received were from people who were able to stop on their own, but their friend was not able to.

Companies who are involved in gambling addiction recovery programs should all work together. We also have different approaches to helping people with their gambling addiction but the one thing in common. We are all here to help people rebuild their lives in order for them to have a brighter future. It’s time to work together.

You can read some of these emails at my website.

Mr. Howard Keith has an extensive background in dealing with compulsive gamblers, relatives and friends of gamblers and teenage gamblers.
Mr. Keith believes there are many alternatives to aid in the recovery of a gambling addiction verses a twelve step program. A large percentage of his emails were from compulsive gamblers looking for an alternative to Gamblers Anonymous and twelve step programs. Gamblers Anonymous also helps a significant number of people each year but there is a large percentage that they are unable to reach.
