Mind Power

When most people refer to mind power they could be referring to the term in any one of several different contexts.

The first context is in terms of mental discipline. In this sense mind power refers to the actual stamina of the mind when it comes to such abilities as concentration, memory, comprehension, information and the ability to learn. The longer you can stay up nights studying, spend hours writing or solving problems, or remember facts and trivia the more mind power that you are considered to have. Someone who is good at Sudoko could be considered to have a lot of mind power.

Yet another context that mind power is describe in has a bit of a neruolinguistic bent. In this sense mind power refers to an individual’s ability to alter his or her own behavior to produce a predictable set of reactions from another individual. It is about the power of persuasion and more about satisfying the ego than anything else.

There are all kinds of NLP programs, books and courses available both online and offline that will teach you how to increase your mind power. The problem with this type of mind power is that it doesn’t often allow others the option of having free will. Many people who practice mind power with the intent of manipulating other people are often bitterly disappointed when it does not work because to think that one’s mind somehow dominates another is a delusion.

Another context that the term mind power is often used in is in context of witchcraft. This is applicable to books about the manifestation of objects using occult or mystical means. Using chants, spells and positive affirmations are usually part of demonstrating this kind of mind power.

Once again this type of mental power is associated with delusions that are more appropriate to the Dark Ages then to these modern times. Still thanks to books like the Secret, ritualistic and repetitive distortions of thought are being used to try and alter events that might occur in the future. The jury is still out on whether this type of mind power is actually real and it has been out since the death of Socrates.

The words mind power can also have a psychic meaning. Sometimes mind power is used to describe someone who can read minds or read the future. As this is not a normal function of the mind, it is seen as a powerful skill.

Mind power is a term that is best left to describe mental proficiency and the powers of an excellent memory rather than to describe attempts to manipulate others through the power of thought or metaphysical means. In fact, if you want to subscribe to Buddhism, one of the surest ways to weaken your mind power would be too make it busy with affirmations, wishes and thoughts of controlling others with your thoughts. It is a still mind that is led to clarity as the result of a profound and consistent meditation that is more likely to be a powerful and focused one.

The Secret – The Law of Attraction

The Secret – The Law of Attraction

The thing about the book, the Secret is that it is not secret at all. The principles in it have been extolled for centuries by a number of very spiritual individuals who have not been credited by the authors of the Secret. In fact it is insulting to most people’s intelligence to have the wisdom of the ages repackaged and remarketed to them on Oprah.

These authors who were not credited in the Secret include individuals such as Dion Fortune (the mother of white light), Alistair Crowley, Florence Scovell Schinn (who pioneered all positive affirmation books) and countless others have written about these principles in books that have been widely published and read by millions of people.

The authors of the Secret also blatantly ignored the masterworks of philosophy, the works of Shakespeare and even the Bible itself, which discusses the Law of Attraction with the phrase “the word is flesh.” There was also no credit given to any of the authors such as Norman Hallet who wrote “Think and Grow Rich” or Norman Vincent Peale who originally wrote “The Power of Positive Thinking.” Even Ayn Rand who first wrote “The Virtues of Selfishness” was totally ignored.

To even define The Secret as a book about the Law of Attraction is an insult to the many authors who are true masters of writing about the subject. A good example is Samantha Stevens, a metaphysical author from Canada who was writing about the same subject in 2001 in four books that predate The Secret and that were widely sold on Amazon and Walmart. Another author that is badly ripped off in The Secret is Wayne Dwyer who wrote several ground breaking books about

The Law of Attraction coined phrases like “Attitude of Gratitude” long before this greedy collection of marketing experts decided to pinch it and include it in their marketing scam. It seems that part of the law of attraction might be to appropriate the ideas of others and make them your own. In fact this law of taking credit for other people’s ideas is actually one of Robert Green’s ugly and political “48 Laws of Power” and not really qualified to be one of the laws of attraction.

One thing that is very flawed about The Secret is that it does not have the inherent wisdom in it to take notions of success away from the realm of money and into the realm of happiness and spiritual achievement.

The book does not really have anything to do with the Law of Attraction and is more about the Law of Greed. What it really does is set up unrealistic expectations of oneself and others. Failures no longer become a matter of rational cause and effect. Now when a failure occurs in someone’s life it is because the person is guilty of not being able to practice the “Law of Attraction.”

This type of superstitious and metaphysical belief about manifestation is a delusion that belongs in the Dark Ages and is inappropriate and also inhumane to adopt in the twenty first century. Surely we are in a position in this modern age to provide people with real solutions and not the false hopes as exemplified by the idea that our thoughts can manifest us things like new bikes, cash and jewelry. It’s psychologically and spiritually bereft and much too primitive for this society.

MORE THAN JUST KUNG FU
Chinese techniques for your health and strength

China, for many, is a place of mythical wonders. Famous for its accurate numerology practices and effective geomancy beliefs, it has always been a country that offered something invigorating for our lives and our bodies. It’s ironic to think that these practices are centuries old, but they all seem so new and refreshing for us.

Among these practices are a series of massage techniques that would give the body a renewing sensation, and the mind an enlightening experience. Let’s take a look at these massage methods:

Chi Kung. The Internal Harmony.

Chi Kung is a philosophical system at least 5000 years old, which made it through the centuries and became very popular at the beginning of this millennium. This art of the vital energy is the most advanced and complex method of improving health and longevity, by offering a feeling of harmony with yourself and with the surrounding world. The four main principles of this technique are: the mind, the eyes, the movement and the breathing.

The mind represents the intention, the eyes are considered the focusing of intention, the movement is the action of intention and the breathing is flood of intention. It obviously takes time and practice to understand profoundly their dynamics.

The benefits resulting from practicing Chi Kung can be divided into five categories:

Cure of illnesses and improvement of the general health state
Increase of vitality and development of your internal force
Prolongation of youth
Cultivation of the mind and intellectual capacities
Spiritual progress

According to Chinese medicine, various diseases are the result of anger, sadness, joy, harmony and optimism deficit. All these factors, together with deficient nourishment, make Chiu – the vital energy – to diminish or to be present in only certain parts of your body. By practicing Chi Kung you can learn to be more conscious of what’s going on in your inner universe and to build yourself a defensive system against the disequilibrium, which affects your vital force.

The harmony of breathing and the agility obtained without efforts during the training sessions, confer a better concentration and a fast recovery from stress, tiredness, by inviting you to meditation.

Tai Chung Chuan. A Dance of Wonders

Every morning in China, hundreds of people, in large groups or alone, perform apparently weird movements. You might have encountered a scene like this on TV. These waving movements following a silent rhythm represent for them an ancestral inheritance. The eternity of the universe and the pulse of its permanent changes have induced the idea that the human being can become immortal if he adapts to and follows this rhythm. This technique represents a putting into practice of the subtle side of the human being (spiritual evolution, mental control etc) and the physical side (muscles, articulation, bones etc).

Anytime you feel mental and/or physical fatigue, Tai Chi Chuan gives you the possibility to gain back, in only a few minutes, you strength and your harmony.

These are but a couple of China’s wonderful gifts to the world, practices that soothe and strengthen our minds and bodies, and greatly contributes to our health. So don’t hesitate to further your studies on Chinese heritage. Chances are, you’ll find something that would truly captivate your tastes and senses.

Heal Yourself Through Yoga Practice

Sunday, May 15th, 2005

There are several medical conditions that can be improved by practicing yoga. It can be used to lessen the negative effects of infertility, lung disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, cancer, high blood pressure, and joint pain. The beneficial effects of yoga practices are well recognized not only by the yoga community but also by medical doctors.

Yoga is becoming more and more popular in the West as those of us that have embraced it’s healing qualities find out just how pwerful it REALLY is.

One of the main elements that lead to an illness is stress and anxiety. Being the cause for a huge number of sicknesses, this item, which we develop in our minds, can be reduced through a good usage of yoga techniques. Here are just some of the problems that are related to an over active stress response: depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, some types of diabetes mellitus, cardio-vascular disease, several autoimmune diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, reproductive problems, and an aggravated suppression of the immune system.

The response of the sympathetic nervous system can trigger stress in our metabolism. The reaction to various outside stimuli is also known as the “fight or flight” response – the mind and body, faced with an endangering or disturbing element, prepare for one of the two options. Physically, this is manifested through an instantaneous heart rate increase, together with a high ascent of blood pressure. Breathing gets shallow and the muscles tense in anticipation to the following action. Internally, this response reduces the blood flow to internal organs and processes that are not essential in that particular moment (such as digestion and elimination) are shut down. This state of increased awareness and readiness is beneficial on a short term, preparing our body to react to the outside interventions and stimuli. Both in a “fight” and in a “flight” situation, the body is physically and mentally prepared to act. The problem arises when long-term exposure to similar stress takes place. This “fight or flight” response is only meant to help on short periods of time – the longer it is activated the less resources will the body have to function normally.

There is a natural countermeasure for the “fight or flight” response. It is called the parasympathetic nervous system or the “relaxation response.” It is automatically activated when the elements that caused the stress are gone but it is also possible to increase its effects by breathing deeply and relaxing your muscles. By increasing the length of this process we allow our body to recover faster, enabling it to eliminate the harmful effects of stress in a prompt and efficient manner.

Yoga highlights the idea that by using breathing and relaxation techniques you can reduce the harmful effects of stress factors on your body. A lessened “fight or flight” response can also be achieved by looking at adverse factors as challenges rather than threats. This approach allows your mind to focus on finding a solution, rather than creating an abrupt response. Another concept employed by this technique is that of acting versus reacting, of taking initiative versus responding to outside factors.

The positive effects of yoga during a healing process are undeniable. However, these techniques should only be used as a form of support and the healing shouldn’t rely solely on them. The best results are achieved by combining yoga with traditional and modern medicine and by addressing a problem both from a mental and physical point of view.
